Debris Removal Update

As of Friday, December 11, 2020, 58,000 cubic yards of debris has been removed from the streets of Diamondhead.  The work continues every day, and we are grateful for the hard work of the debris removal contractors and debris monitors who are working 11 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Residents are reminded to try to separate their debris into two piles.  One is only vegetation, and the other everything else.  Vegetative debris goes to one landfill while C&D debris goes to another landfill.  If a truck passes that is picking up only vegetative debris, a mixed pile will be skipped until another truck looking for that type of debris passes.  By separating the piles, this will allow the contractors to remove the debris faster from our streets.  If you have black garbage bags, it is recommended to put those next to your garbage can since Waste Management will pick that up on your regular garbage pick-up day.

Residents are also reminded to drive safely while workers are present on our streets.  The city and police have received some complaints from residents about the debris trucks blocking roads while picking up the debris.  This is going to happen on our smaller residential roads.  The truck needs to be able to pick up the debris with the grapple.  This means the truck will likely be in the middle of the smaller roads, which will not allow traffic to pass.  After picking up a pile, the truck will simply move to the next pile on the same road.  Residents are asked to be patient for the next couple of weeks while this work continues.  It is recommended for residents to find an alternative route if you drive up to a truck that is working to remove the debris from our streets.  If not, please be prepared to wait until his work is finished on that street, or the truck departs for the landfill with a full truck of debris.  There is no other way to pick up the debris with these large trucks without causing some blocking of roads.  Furthermore, the debris monitors are not allowed to direct traffic.  The debris removal contractor is using flaggers on higher traffic roads as needed.  Again, please be patient while the contractors are working hard to clean up our beautiful city.

Residents are asked to get all their remaining debris to the street at this time.  The contractor is required to make two passes on every street in 30 calendar days, and they are almost halfway through this time.   A third and final pass will be made after this date.
